Towards Crossing Linguistic Horizons: The Case of Finetuned Vietnamese Large Language Models

In the realm of natural language processing, the development of large language models has revolutionized various linguistic applications. However, the majority of these models have been primarily focused on English, leaving many languages underrepresented. This talk addresses this gap by presenting the case of finetuned Vietnamese large language models, aiming to expand the horizon of linguistic research and applications. We delve into the process of adapting pre-trained models to the Vietnamese language, discussing the challenges encountered and the methodologies employed to overcome them. Furthermore, we examine the performance of these models across various linguistic tasks. In addition, we also explore the utilization of large language models for cybersecurity purposes. Our findings contribute to the broader endeavor of fostering linguistic diversity and inclusivity in the field of natural language processing.

报告人简介

Dr. Tho T. Quan is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) - VNU-HCMC, Vietnam. He earned his B.Eng. degree in Information Technology from HCMUT in 1998 and his Ph.D. degree from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in 2006. Dr. Tho's research interests encompass Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, intelligent systems, and formal methods. He currently serves as the Acting Dean of the Faculty, demonstrating his leadership and commitment to the institution. His substantial publication record includes 11 articles in Q1 journals and 3 recent papers presented at A* AI conferences, showcasing his significant contributions to the field. Dr. Tho's dedication to research is evident from his involvement in multiple projects as both a principal investigator and collaborator. His work has focused on various aspects of Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, and software engineering, resulting in findings that have garnered recognition and citations from his peers. This recognition solidifies his position as a leading expert in these domains.

As an educator, Dr. Tho has demonstrated his passion for nurturing future computer scientists and engineers. He has supervised 56 graduate students, guiding their research endeavors. His mentorship has been instrumental in helping students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, leading to their success in both academic and professional settings. In his role as the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering at HCMUT, Dr. Tho has made significant contributions to the faculty's growth and development. He has actively participated in shaping the faculty's strategic direction, fostering collaborations with industry partners, and promoting a culture of innovation and excellence in research and education. His leadership has been crucial in driving the faculty forward and enhancing its reputation. Dr. Quan Thanh Tho's extensive knowledge, research prowess, and dedication to advancing the field of computer science have established him as a driving force in the academic community, both within Vietnam and on an international scale. His contributions continue to shape the future of computer science and inspire the next generation of researchers and professionals in the field.
